Both Moggallana & Sariputta were born on the same day and were childhood friends. Both were from wealthy families but took up a wandering life until they met Buddha. They were ordained by Buddha.
Moggallana was particularly skillful in exercising supernatural powers. Buddha would call on him to perform magical feats.
They both were wise but Sariputta had the most wisdom.
Buddha entrusted them to keep the doctrine pure.
